If you're planning a wine-tasting adventure in Queenstown, you're in luck. Just beyond the adventure capital of New Zealand lies one of the world's most exciting cool-climate wine regions.
At Appellation Wine Tours, we've spent more than 25 years introducing visitors to the wineries that make Central Otago so special. Every week, we visit vineyards throughout Gibbston, Bannockburn, and Cromwell. As a result, we have a unique perspective on which wineries consistently deliver unforgettable experiences.
There are dozens of excellent cellar doors throughout the region. If you don't know where to start, here are some of our favourite wineries to visit near Queenstown.
Why Central Otago is a Must-Visit Wine Region
Central Otago is New Zealand's southernmost wine region and is internationally renowned for producing exceptional Pinot Noir. The region is divided into several distinct sub-regions, each with its own climate, soils, and personality. Gibbston is known for elegant, high-altitude wines, while Bannockburn produces richer, more concentrated styles. Cromwell and Pisa offer outstanding Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and aromatic whites.
One of the best things about wine tasting in Central Otago is how quickly the landscape changes. In a single day, you can travel from dramatic river gorges and mountain vineyards to sun-drenched terraces overlooking Lake Dunstan.

Wineries in Gibbston Valley
Located just 25 minutes from Queenstown, Gibbston Valley wine region is often the first stop for visitors exploring Central Otago wine country.
Gibbston Valley Winery
As one of the pioneers of the region, Gibbston Valley helped put Central Otago on the international wine map. Today, visitors can enjoy tastings, vineyard views, and the famous underground wine cave. The winery remains an excellent introduction to the region's wine history. Our Gourmet Food & Wine Tour includes a tasting within the cave itself.
Chard Farm
Few cellar doors can match the dramatic arrival at Chard Farm. Accessed via a historic road carved into the hillside above the Kawarau Gorge, the winery combines spectacular scenery with consistently impressive wines. It's one of the most photographed wineries in the region for good reason.
Mt Rosa Wines
For visitors wanting a relaxed, authentic Central Otago wine experience, Mt Rosa is always a crowd favourite. This family-owned winery offers a welcoming cellar door with spectacular views across Gibbston Valley and a tasting experience that feels genuinely personal.
Mt Rosa produces a range of wines that showcase the unique character of the region, including Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Rosé and Sauvignon Blanc. Their outdoor tasting spaces make it an especially enjoyable stop on a sunny Central Otago afternoon, and it's easy to see why so many of our guests leave saying it was one of the highlights of their day.
Coal Pit
For visitors seeking boutique, single-vineyard wines, Coal Pit delivers a memorable experience. Their small-scale approach and focus on estate-grown wines have earned them a loyal following among Pinot Noir enthusiasts. For those looking for exclusivity, this is it.
Kinross
A visit to Kinross is one of the best ways to explore the diversity of Central Otago wine in one place. Unlike most wineries, Kinross acts as the official cellar door for several boutique wine labels that don't have their own dedicated tasting rooms. As a result, visitors have the rare opportunity to sample wines from acclaimed produces such as Valli, Hawkshead, High Garden, and Wild Irishman alongside Kinross's own range. The winery has earned national recognition for its wine tourism experiences, including winning the 2024 Qualmark New Zealand Wine Tourism Award.
Wineries in Bannockburn and Cromwell
If Gibbston is the elegant older sibling, Bannockburn is the bold and expressive one. This warmer, drier sub-region produces some of Central Otago's most powerful and complex wines.
Carrick Winery
Set above the Bannockburn Inlet with stunning vineyard views, Carrick combines organic winemaking with one of the region's most enjoyable lunch settings. Their estate-grown wines showcase the distinctive character of Bannockburn beautifully. Our Boutique Wine Tour visits Carrick Winery & Restaurant, enjoying a platter lunch and flight of wine.
Akarua
Located in the heart of Bannockburn, Akarua has built an outstanding reputation for premium Pinot Noir and sparkling wine. The vineyard's unique location and soils help create wines with remarkable depth and elegance. If you are looking for a more in depth experience, chat to us about the Blending Experience or Museum Tasting.
Felton Road
Felton Road is often regarded as one of Central Otago's benchmark producers. Their biodynamic philosophy and world-class Pinot Noir have earned international recognition among wine critics and collectors alike. Visits are by appointment only and run around 2 hours.
Mt Difficulty
Perched high above Bannockburn with sweeping views across the valley, Mt Difficulty consistently appears on visitor recommendations thanks to its outstanding wines and spectacular setting. Our Private Boutique Wine Tour enjoys a beautiful platter lunch and wine tasting here.
Misha's Vineyard
Misha's Vineyard combines award-winning Central Otago wines with a unique story rooted in the world of musical theatre. Founder Misha Wilkinson came from a theatrical family and started her career with the Australian Opera. Her passion for the stage is reflected in the names of her wines. Labels such as The Starlet Sauvignon Blanc, Limelight Riesling, Dress Circle Pinot Gris, and the High Note Pinot Noir all draw inspiration from Misha's life in the performing arts. The result is a wine range that feels both personal and memorable.
Should You Drive Yourself or Join a Wine Tour?
While it's possible to visit wineries independently, many visitors quickly discover that Central Otago is larger than it appears on a map. Some of the most rewarding cellar doors are spread across multiple sub-regions, and wine tasting and driving don't mix particularly well.
Our guests often tell us that joining a guided wine tour allows them to relax, learn about the region, and discover boutique wineries they would never have found on their own. Our tours regularly visit multiple sub-regions, including Gibbston, Cromwell, and Bannockburn, allowing guests to experience the true diversity of Central Otago wines in a single day.

Final Thoughts
The best wineries near Queenstown aren't found in just one valley. To truly appreciate Central Otago wine, we recommend exploring beyond Gibbston and venturing into Bannockburn and Cromwell as well.
Each sub-region offers something unique, from elegant high-altitude Pinot Noir in Gibbston to the bold, concentrated wines of Bannockburn and the balanced, expressive wines of Cromwell.
Whether you're a dedicated wine enthusiast or simply looking for a memorable day out, Central Otago offers some of the most spectacular wine experiences in New Zealand.
