What Is Sustainable Tourism in Queenstown?

Sustainable tourism in Queenstown focuses on reducing environmental impact while supporting local communities and preserving the region’s natural beauty. With an ambitious goal of becoming the world’s first carbon-zero visitor economy by 2030, Queenstown is leading the way.

Innovative initiatives, like a proposed cable car transportation system expected by 2028, are helping reshape how visitors explore the region. Alongside these developments, local businesses are embracing low-emission transport, waste reduction, and sustainable practices to help achieve this goal.

How Wine Tours Support Sustainable Tourism

Wine tours play an important role in sustainable tourism in Queenstown. The Central Otago wine region is globally renowned for it’s community of winemakers dedicated to protecting the land. Central Otago is one of the global leaders in sustainable viticulture with around 23–30% of vineyards certified organic/biodynamic, and approximately 98% certified under ‘Sustainable Winegrowing NZ’.

Many local wineries are adopting:

  • Organic and biodynamic farming practices
  • Water conservation methods
  • Low intervention winemaking (an emphasis on terroir expression)

By choosing a guided wine tour, visitors reduce the need for multiple vehicles on the road. This helps to lower emissions and ease congestion in popular wine regions.

Appellation Wine Tours are proud to partner with wineries that share our commitment to sustainability. We aim to ensure every experience reflects both quality and environmental responsibility.

Appellation Wine Tours: Supporting sustainability within the community

In addition to our wine tours and electric vehicles, we also support local initiatives and events. In 2025 we supported Electrify Queenstown, a 2-day event which hosted guest speakers from around the globe. Interesting talking points were raised for surrounding the future of Queenstown moving towards an electric focused energy usage.

We have also supported Green Drinks in both 2025 and 2026. These are wonderful events hosted by Sustainable Queenstown for likeminded individuals to come together for a fun, socialising and education.
